2010 Alumni Game

Saturday, April 10th turned out to be a beautiful day for the Alumni Game. Turn out was very good considering the U.S. Open Cup Louisville Lightning game and Dan Greulich's wedding annoucement party at Keeneland. Congratulations to both by the way.

Over the past three years, this game has always been high scoring. In 2008, the Varsity won 4-3, in 2009, the Alumni won 4-2, and this year, the Varsity won 6-3.

Rightfully so, our Alumni have a playing standard that they expect of themselves. So I think sometimes our older Alumni want to avoid playing at all costs! But this game is more about members of the Centre Soccer Family getting together. Moreover, it is vital that the Varsity get this extra Spring Game. After last weekend at the University of Kentucky, the Alumni Game gave us a chance to see the team in a different formation. This is invaluable to us as we begin to prepare for preseason.

Many thanks to those who made the effort to join us. The new adidas promotional t-shirts that were given out are now on sale. The adidas short sleeve t-shirt is $20, long sleeve is $25, the hooded sweatshirt is $35, and the hats are $20. The shirts are black with the adidas logo with Colonel Soccer and the Old Centre logo. Louisville Lightning beat Cincinnati 1790 Express

Coach Burch joined David Horne, Nick Judah, and Adam Boyer after their big win last night against Cincinnati 1790 Express. The Lightning are still in the hunt for a play-off spot after beating 1790 for the first time this season. David Horne played last season for 1790 who lost in the finals of the North American Indoor Championships.

Sightings at the game included Matt Kowaleski, Chris Baumann, Matt McGoron, and Josh Davis. All of whom promised to be at the Alumni Game.

2010 Alumni Game

The 2010 Alumni Game will take place on Saturday, April 10, at 5:00 pm. A cook-out will take place immediately after the game.

The men's team will play at the University of Kentucky on April 3 at 2:30 and 4:45 for those who want to scout the team.

Senior Banquet 2009

The team celebrated another excellent season and said good-bye to 11 seniors. This senior class had the most 4 year wins overall, with a record of 55-17-4.

The Pete Millon Award for most outstanding leadership went to Alex Wegener.

The Kent Starkweather Award for most inspirational player went to Alex Wegener.

The Farm 2009

Below are a few pictures from the Farm. Aside from the touch work with the DANS and a severe 2 mile loop, the boys enjoyed some much needed R&R. It was a fun day enchanced by the apperance of David Horne and Nick Judah. It means a lot to the program when alumni like Jeff Kedrowski (with us Friday and Saturday) along with Nick and David take time to stop by and be with the team.

The food was good, the team got a chance to bond more and over all, I can't say enough about how positive this time away from campus in preseason means to the boys.

My wife Laura cooked up 20 pounds of wings, 60 burgers, 40 hotdogs, a giant bowl of black bean salsa, hummus, corn, and tempeh.

Alumni Weekend

We were lucky today. The skies held all afternoon with plenty of sun, even though the forecast was for stormy weather.

I watched the game from the perspective of the only referee in the game. Personally, the first half was the better of the two halves. Both sides moved the ball across the field and passed well. The wind was a major factor in each half. But in the first, fatigue wasn't a factor and ball movement was surprisingly good.

Halftime: Centre 1 - Alumni 0

It was neat to see so many past players out there playing today. It was clearly fun and the talent was undeniable.

How nice to have a crowd today? I was pleasantly surprised at the number of people, including students, who showed up. In addition, Shawn Lyons from the Alumni Office was in attendance for the game. Both the Alumni Office and Centre Soccer Program provided alumni with shirts and gifts for coming out.

Todd Davis forgot how to do a throw - in and blamed the field; Corbett was never happy with the official's decisions. But what is new?

Coach Burch grilled with plastic forks and everyone seemed to be having fun after the game. There was even a croquet course set up on the field.

7th Annual Alumni Game Date Changed

Several alumni have requested a move from the scheduled April 11 date since it conflicts with Easter Weekend.

Therefore the 7th Annual Alumni Game will take place Sunday, April 5, 2009. Former players, fans, and parents are invited. The Centre College men's spring team will play the alumni at 3:00 pm, April 5th.

A cookout will take place immediately after the game. Alumni, parents, and fans are encouraged to bring a side dish for the cookout.

Please r.s.v.p with head coach Jeb Burch at jeb.burch@centre.edu if you plan on attending. A limited number of t-shirts will be given to those who r.s.v.p. early.

The day before, April 4th, the Centre College men's spring team will play at the University of Kentucky. Centre vs. UK @ 4:30 pm, Centre vs. Bellarmine @ 7:00 pm.

NSCAA All-American Banquet, St. Louis, MO

The NSCAA All-American Banquet took place in St. Louis, Missouri on Saturday, January 17, 2009. Senior captain Adam Boyer (Louisville, KY) became the first Centre College player in men's soccer history to be named Academic All-Ameircan and All-American in the same year. Head Coach Jeb Burch, along with assistant coach David Horne, joined Adam Boyer at the Banquet.

The Centre College women's program achieved another first this year as well when Erin Menard (Louisville, KY) was also named Academic All-American and All-American. This is the first time ever a woman's player has been nominated for either team. Erin was joined by Head Coach Jay Hoffman and her mother, Lisa Menard.

Komen II & Colorado College Games

The first picture is of Andy Burke winning the ball against Austin College. The second picture is right before kick - off at Colorado College on Sunday. The pictures were taken by Linda Burke.

On Friday, we played the Komen Game II. The Colonels swept this competition, raising more money than Austin College and winning the game 1-0. Last year, Austin raised more money than Centre but the Colonels won the game 3-2(1OT). In total, the Austin & Centre men's soccer teams have raised $12,300 for Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Farm Workouts

Attached are a few a pictures from a day out at the farm with the team, during preseason. The boy's have a very difficult 2.4 mile loop that they can run in the shade. I recommend you ask any of our first year's what they thought when they first saw the hill. The training is all technical and fitness based but as important, the time to bond as a group. The lake is pristine and affords the group some well deserved R&R in between work outs. Plus we incorporated two discussions. One that focused on strengths of past players and a review of Focused For Soccer by Bill Beswick, a book the players read over the summer. A good friend smokes a pig for us and his mother puts together a spread of food that is second to none. Yet again this year, we had left overs. Which reflects how much food that is prepared. My dog tried to swim for the first time and sunk like a rock. We also had some remote controlled power boats, and while they shared the same frequency, you were able to amount duel attacks on unsuspecting swimmers.

Preseason Begins

The Centre College men's soccer team will report to preseason on Sunday, August 17th. Since the team is playing a full 20 regular season games, there will be no exhibition game this year.
